What is natural bodybuilding?

Natural bodybuilding — Natural bodybuilding is competitive physique sport in which athletes build muscle without anabolic steroids or other substances banned by tested federations.

Natural bodybuilding is a discipline of resistance training and competitive physique sport in which athletes pursue muscular development, conditioning, and symmetry without the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids, prohormones, or other substances on the prohibited lists of tested federations. The defining feature is voluntary submission to a tested standard: athletes agree to polygraph and urine screens administered by their sanctioning body. In the WNBF, a failed urine or polygraph test for anabolic steroids, growth hormone, peptides, or SARMs brings a lifetime ban from membership.

History

The natural bodybuilding movement emerged as a reaction to the unregulated steroid use widespread in mainstream bodybuilding competitions. The WNBF held the first professional drug-tested bodybuilding contest in March 1990, with urine and polygraph testing and a five-year drug-free requirement. It raised that requirement to seven years in 1994 and to ten years, enforced by polygraph across the INBF, WNBF, and affiliates, from 1 January 2019.

Banned-substance standards

Each federation publishes its own banned list. The WNBF states that its testing complies with the World Anti-Doping Code and the WADA prohibited list. Typical bans include anabolic steroids, growth hormone, insulin (for performance use), SARMs, and peptide secretagogues. Permitted substances vary: caffeine is not on the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, but the WNBF requires athletes to be at least two years free of over-the-counter hormones and pro-hormones before their first competition.

The peptide question

Peptides occupy a contested middle ground, but tested standards are strict. The healing peptide BPC-157 is prohibited by WADA under class S0 (non-approved substances), and the WNBF bans all synthetic peptides unless WADA states otherwise. Growth-hormone-axis peptides (GHRH analogues and growth hormone secretagogues) are uniformly prohibited.
